Abstract

ISSUE: Following onset of a dramatic increase in vancomycin-resistant enterococcus (VRE) bloodstream infections (BSI) among patients (n = 7) on the bone marrow transplant unit at a university based children's hospital, a multifaceted intervention was designed to identify and isolate colonized patients, to educate healthcare workers on the importance of adherence to isolation practices, and to reduce the rate of VRE colonization in the population.
