Abstract
IN the course of an investigation of the mechanism of enzymatic oxidation of serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine) by human serum1, we found that apparently identical chromatographic reaction products2 resulted when this oxidation was catalysed non-enzymatically by cupric ion. We became curious as to what extent transitional metals other than copper catalysed this reaction, and expanded our investigation to include a study of the relative catalytic effectiveness of 18 transitional elements in the oxidations of related compounds of biological interest.
