Abstract
A simple formula involving the oscillator strength sum S(− 3 2 )gives an upper bound for the Van der Waals constant C ab. Modifications of the formula give C ab for all pairs ab of the atoms H, He, NE, Ar, Kr, and Xe, within an error of 0.3% to 12.1%.
