Abstract

L/min (4). However, the effects of AVFs on patients with aortic stenosis have not been studied although one fifth of dialysis patients have aortic stenosis (5). AVFs can achieve high blood flow and can have a significant hemodynamic impact within a few days after their placement. Patients with advanced heart failure or aortic stenosis may benefit from an alternative access strategy such as tunneled catheters or peritoneal dialysis. If AVF is chosen in these patients, close monitoring and potentially early ligation of the AVF should be considered upfront. In addition, because of the high prevalence and quick progression of aortic stenosis in dialysis patients, periodic assessment of cardiac functions is necessary, especially in patients with high flow fistulae or grafts.
