Abstract

This article defines values, describes four general perspectives on the development of values, and outlines a number of processes in the development of values that are emerging as new concerns for researchers. The major perspectives that shape contemporary knowledge on value development include the socialization perspective, the social-cognitive theory of children's internalization, the relational perspective and bilateral and coconstructionist theories of internalization. Three new directions for research on value development are described: parental socialization strategies, unconscious processes (cultural practices and automatic processes), and the constructive processes of parent and child.
