Abstract

Objective To evaluate the value of pleural biopsy in the differential diagnosis of pleural effusion. Methods Fifty-six patients with pleural effusion were analyzed retrospectively. The positive rate of pathological diagnosis,successful rate of obtaining specimens, factors affecting diagnosing rate and complications of the pleural biopsy were studied. Results Furty-nine cases of the fifty patients with plcural effusion got pathologic diagnosis and the positive rate was 87.5%. To increase the times of pleural biopsy could get high positive diagnosing rate. The earlier the pleural biopsy has been done, the higher rate of the patho-logial diagnosis will be. The incidence of pneumothorax was 1.6%. Conclusions Pleural biopsy is a safe and useful method for differential diagnosis of pleural effusion. Early biopsy can get a high rate of pathological diagnosis. Key words: Pleural biopsy; Pleural effusion
