Abstract
Objective To assess the value of combined detection of Heinz bodies and G6PD in screening of thalassemia. Methods Detection of Heinz bodies and G6PD were performed in addition to hemoglobin(Hb)electrophoresis and tests for mean corpuscular volume(MCV)and red cell osmotic fragility(RCOF). Results The accuracy of detecting α - thalassemia differed significantly between the combined test of Hb electrophoresis, MCV, and RCOF and the combined method of Hb electrophoresis, MCV, RCOF, Heinz bodies, and G6PD(90.5% vs. 96.8%). Conclusions Of Hb electrophoresis combined with tests for MCV, RCOF, Heinz bodies, and G6PD is a better method in screening of thalassemia. Key words: Heinz bodies; G6PD; Hemoglobin electrophoresis; Thalassemia
