Abstract

This study was made to determine l)what method of counting of AgNORs was most useful in diagnosis of NPC vs active squamous epithelial cells(SE) & 2)whether any of the counting methods gave correlation with clinical stage or survival. Biopsies of 35 cases on NPC & 13 area of active epithelium from the same cases were examined. The one-step silver stain was applied to 4-micron paraffin sections, & counts of AgNOR were done at x100, counting at least 200 nuclei, using 4 methods: PLCT , counting aggregates of small “dots” as one unit, & using only one level of focus; PPCT, each dot in an aggregate being counted as one unit, one focus level; ALCT , as with PLCT but counting all planes of focus; ADCT , as with PDCT but ‘counting at all planes of focus. Nuclei with no lump or dot were scored as “0”. All methods showed a higher count for NPC vs SE (p
