Abstract

The introduction of new public management increased the responsibility of public administrations to their stakeholders. As various stakeholders use audit reports, value for money (VFM) audits have grown in importance. The Internet is a modern way to disseminate the information produced by the Supreme Audit Institutions (SAIs). By conducting a survey of 18 countries, including 14 European Union members, this paper analyzes to what extent SAIs carry out VFM audits and publish the reports on the Internet. The results show that Nordic countries, the Netherlands, and Anglo-American countries use VFM audits and publish the results on the Internet extensively.
