Abstract

An essential feature of agricultural supply chains is that they must balance risk and reward sharing among participants so as to minimize transactions costs while adding value. A framework for understanding the tradeoff between internal transactions costs of ownership and external transactions costs of risk sharing is explored. Applied research results suggest producers and processors have incentives for increasing vertical arrangements and industry consolidation.
