Abstract
In this paper the two values of social justice and personal caring are identified as key ideologies within social work education. Their presence is traced within a historical ebb and flow of theory and practice and it is argued that this dialectic is embedded in social and individual systems. Based on fieldwork research with social work lecturers and practice teachers, it is argued that anti-oppressive social work needs a reflexive theory/practice model to provide an understanding of how structural power affects all aspects of an individual. This demands a working synthesis of the two values of Personal Canng and Social Justice within an understanding of a multiple approach.
