Abstract

The measurement of parathyroid hormone (PTH) is highly important in the investigation of calcium disorders and in the management of renal osteodystrophy. We have evaluated a new PTH assay method provided by Beckman-Coulter-Immunotech. In a preliminary study, we have found satisfying analytical characteristics for this new method. We also established equivalences between the Immunotech assay and the Nichols Allegro assay for some clinical decision limits. We thus propose for this new method, reference values established in healthy subjects with a normal vitamin D status. By using these values, we found that the Immunotech assay and the Allegro assay give similar clinical information for the diagnosis of primary hyperparathyroidism. Furthermore, we propose assay-specific decision values with the Immunotech assay for the management of renal osteodystrophy.
