Abstract

General sea level rise will produce various physical and environmental impacts. Vulnerability level of an area related to sea level rise can be estimated by using vulnerability index assessment method. The current research was conducted to measure the vulnerability of coastal area due to sea level rise. Mapping of vulnerability level is done through composite approach of physical and social vulnerabilities. Physical vulnerability is estimated by considering various factors such as tidal range, proximity to coastline, type of aquifer, hydrolic conductivity, depth of ground water from ground level, volume of river flow, depth of river at the rivermouth, rate of sea level rise, geomophology, coastal slope, significant wave height and sedimentation rate. Social vulnerability, however, is evaluated among others from the effort to reduce sediment supply, river flow management, technical engineering of coastal region, groundwater consumption, landuse pattern and environmental protection and coastal protection structure. The current approach uses spatial approach by means of Geographic Information System to process and analize data. The result of this research showed that the composit index was able to determinate the vulnerability of the location.
