Abstract

Valsalva retinopathy is a condition in which increased intraocular venous pressure causes rupture of fragile retinal capillaries and subsequent detachment of the internal limiting membrane, causing subhyaloid (preretinal), intraretinal or vitreous haemorrhages. The pressure rise is secondary to rapid rises in intra-abdominal or intra-thoracic pressures during Valsalva manoeuvres—such as forceful straining in labour or when lifting, coughing or vomiting [1,2].
