Abstract

This chapter describes valley grasslands and their distribution in California, focusing on the valley grassland of Mediterranean climates termed the California Ecological Province. It first discusses the distribution of valley grasslands in California and their relation to other vegetable types, and then looks at the original California grassland and the evolution of models for grassland vegetation change. The chapter also discusses the role of pathogens and environmental changes in California's valley grassland, concluding with suggestions for conservation management and future research.
