Abstract

Morey, Waugh, and Blashfield (1985) derived 11 scales from the MMPI which purportedly measure personality disorders. We correlated these with the first 11 scales of the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory (MCMI), which measure the same factors. Correlations between equivalent scales were low, and one case was negative. On six scales, the MMPI scores correlated higher with MCMI scales measuring different attributes than with MCMI scales measuring the same factor. We conclude that the MMPI scales may be measuring things other than what the scale names imply, and that they should not be used to assess DSM-III personality disorders.
