Abstract

This investigation examined the validity of skinfold (Sum7 and Sum3), near-infrared interactance (F5000 and F1000), and bioelectrical impedance (BIA) equations for estimating percent body fat (% fat) in 20 black male (age = 21.0 ± 3.0 yrs) volunteers by comparing the estimates to values obtained from underwater weighing (% fat = 13.9 ± 7.0). The statistical analyses included examination of the constant error, standard error of estimate, r, and total error (TE). The results indicated that the Sum3 (TE = 2.1% fat) and Sum7 (TE = 2.4% fat) skinfold equations most accurately estimated % fat, and therefore are recommended over the F5000 (TE = 3.9% fat), F1000 (TE = 4.6% fat), and BIA (TE = 9.4% fat) equations for estimating % fat in black men.
