Abstract

Although peak aerobic power (VO2peak) has been reported to be limited by a preset maximal stepping rate on the StairMaster™ 4000PT® (Luketic et al., J. Strength and Cond. Res., 7:34-38, 1993) a 12-min field test may be useful to classify low to moderately high VO2peak. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the validity of predicting peak aerobic power measured during graded StairMaster(SM) and treadmill running (TR) tests from 12-min SM performance. A second purpose was to examine the reliability of the 12-min SM test. Thirty young females (mean ± SD age = 20.1 ± 3.1 yr, height = 168.3 ± 5.6 cm, mass=64.46 ± 8.44 kg, body fat=25.7 ± 6.5%) completed two 12-min SM tests and graded SM and TR VO2peak tests within a 3-wk period. Mean (± SD) 12-min SM distance was 1.95 ± 0.24 km, and mean SM VO2peak was (37.2 ± 4.1 ml · kg-1 · min-1) significantly (p<.05) less than TR VO2peak (43.6± 4.2 ml · kg-1 · min-1). Correlation coefficients and standard errors of estimate (SEE) for predictions of SM VO2peak (.73 and 2.8 ml · kg-1 · min-1) and TR VO2peak (.52 and 3.6 ml · kg-1 · min-1) from 12-min SM performance indicated that 12-min SM performance accounted for a significantly (p<.05) greater proportion of the variance in SM VO2peak (53%) compared to TR VO2peak (27%). Intraclass (R) and interclass (r) reliability coefficients for the 12-min SM tests were.80 and.84, respectively. The mean (±SD) value for 12-min SM test two (1.91± 0.24 km) was significantly (p<.05) greater than for test one (1.84± 0.31 km). These data suggest the following: 1) the 12-min SM test predicts SM and TR VO2peak within the range of accuracy reported for other widely used field tests, and therefore, may be useful to classify low to moderately high VOpeak; and 2) because 12-min SM performance was significantly greater on the second 12-min SM test, two tests should be administered.
