Abstract

Abstract. A multiport averaging Pitot tube system was evaluated for its feasibility in measuring airflow rates from large agricultural fans in confined poultry facilities. Averaging Pitot tube systems consisting of either a 36 in or 48 in length tubes with multiple ports are sensitive to the velocity pressure caused by airflow generated by a wall-mounted large agricultural fan. The Pitot tubes positioned upstream of the fans and operated with pressure ports facing outward (downstream) produced the strongest signals, recorded by a pressure transducer and a data logger. Using a 48” Fan Assessment Numeration System as reference, the responses of two tube lengths were calibrated in measuring air flow delivered by a 36 in. or 48 in. wall-mounted exhaust fan. Calibration equations were developed and used to predict airflow rates for different fans using Pitot tube. Predicted values and those reported by FANS unit are closely correlated. The Pitot tube system is a light-weight, low-cost, reliable instrument to measure airflow from wall mounted large agricultural exhaust fans.
