Abstract
'Valentine’s Day 2020' documents a key moment in my performance-led research. My PhD utilises absurdist practice to challenge a prescribed ‘meaning’ of non-male identities, based on the values of biological reproductivity. Absurdism is traditionally communicated with cis-male examples, whereas this research argues that the experiences of women, trans, and non-binary people are far more appropriate. Specifically, my research is led by ongoing performance of nurturing care towards a single, unfertilised chicken’s egg. This act is an antagonism of the capitalist expectations of my egg-making body. The experimental text exposes a synergic moment in which an egg-making body and a worm-making body work in opposition to heteronormative expectation. The occurrence falls at a point in the calendar which customarily capitalises upon heterosexual relationships and the romance of reproductivity. In my critical commentary, I will discuss the importance of the egg’s breakage in my research narrative, along with my decision to document in this structure.
