Abstract

the rate, efficacy, and safety of vaginal birth after Caesarean section (VBAC) in grand multiparous women (para 6 or more) are not well documented. The rate and outcome of 117 VBACs in grand multiparous women was compared to the outcome of 234 VBACs in multiparous women (para 2–5). The rate of VBAC in grand multiparous women was 69.4 percent. Ninety-six (82.1%) grand multiparous women delivered vaginally compared to 185 (79.1%) multiparous women. This was not a statistically significant difference. There were no statistically significant differences in the need for augmentation with oxytocin, fetal birth weight, Apgar scores, or hospital stay between the two groups. There was one uterine rupture, two uterine dehiscences, and one stillbirth due to placental abruption in the multiparous women. Vaginal birth after Caesarian section in grand multiparous women is common, efficacious, and relatively safe. Further studies are needed to confirm these findings.
