Abstract

From 1988 through March 1997116 patients were treated by sacrospinal ligament fixation according to Amreich/Richter at the Department of Gynaecology of the University of Halle. The therapeutic indications were prolapse of uterus and subtotal or total vaginal vault prolapse after hysterectomy. In 115 cases the fixation was successful. Recurrent vault prolapse occurred in one woman. We observed the following postoperative complications: urinary tract infection (10.3%), temporary irritation of the sciatic nerve (8.6%), inability to void spontaneously (6%), temporary urinary congestion of the right kidney (4.3%) and postoperative blood loss (4.3%). One female patient decreased 5 days postoperatively after cerebral infarction. Some of the advantages of vaginal sacrospinal vault suspension are an uncomplicated approach, the possibility of combination with additive operations, a high incidence of long-term results and good acceptance by the patient. Sacrospinal vault suspension is an exacting operation with a long learning period.
