Abstract

The VUV MCD and absorption spectra of P 4 isolated in an argon matrix were obtained using synchrotron radiation. Four well resolved 1A 1 → 1T 2 J transitions are observed ( J = A, B, C, D from low to high energy). A Jahn-Teller effect is clearly evident in the 1T 2 C excited state. The 1T 2 D excited state contains substantial 3d character.
