Abstract

Alumina ceramics are often used as vacuum electrical device insulators for the excellent properties, high quality of hardness, high heat-resistivity, high insulation and low gaseous desorption property. Since alumina is a chemically stable, it is difficult to braze with metal directly. So, the surface of alumina is metallized by Mo-Mn method and then brazed to the metal. When negative high voltage is applied to it, the edge of the metallization region becomes a cathode triple junction (CTJ); surface flashover could occur, which limits the surface flashover withstand voltage of the equipment. It is important to understand the vacuum surface flashover characteristics depending on the edge condition of metallized layer. In this study, a surface flashover tests in vacuum were conducted with column alumina samples in different metallization edge conditions. The results showed that not only the withstand voltage but also the conditioning speed changed obviously with the edge condition of metallized layer.
