Abstract

The vacuum polarization potential for two heavy ions is calculated in first order. We present the charge distributions of the nuclei in terms of various models — uniform charge, and the Gaussian harmonic oscillator and Fermi type charge densities. Finite size effects are found to be of the order of a few percent outside the nuclei. Furthermore, we present a new fast and accurate method to calculate the first order vacuum polarization potential.
