Abstract

In the presence of a Skyrme type of background mesonic field configurations the spectrum of the Dirac operator for the Gell-Mann-Levy σ-model is altered. Using the calculations of Kahana and Ripka for the negative energy shift in going from the usual vacuum of the theory, | v 0〈, with constant background fields in space 〈 σ〉 = f π and 〈 π〉=0, to the Skyrme background, it is shown that there exist skyrmion bubbles with zero fermion number and with energy, negative, relative to the usual vacuum | v 0〉, if the Yukawa coupling exceeds a certain value. These would destabilize the usual vacuum | v 0〉.
