Abstract
The issue of how to increase the storage capacity of existing sewerage networks gained in recent times high national priority in Poland as well as in other countries of former Eastern Europe. An interesting and novel technology of constructing stormwater detention facilities using vacuum for enhanced evacuation of water from the tank developed by Polish scientists is presented. Technical description and comparison of traditional and vacuum-driven detention tanks is given. These solutions may constitute an efficient means of reducing the number of Combined sewer overflow occurrences and, consequently, reducing environmental pollution in any country.
