Abstract

North American countries have been debating whether to institute the immunisation of healthy children against influenza as a public health measure. The objective in this systematic review was to evaluate the efficacy (for example, reduction in laboratory confirmed cases), effectiveness (for example, reduction in symptomatic cases) and harms of influenza vaccines in healthy children. Randomised controlled trials (RCTs), cohort and case control studies of any influenza vaccine in healthy children aged under 16 years, published up to September 2007, were identified from the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, MEDLINE, EMBASE, Biological Abstracts, and Science Citation Index and 51 studies were reviewed.
