Abstract
Vaccines are tools that aim to protect an individual or population from a particular disease. They imitate a natural infection and then can stimulate the immune system. They can be divided into live attenuated and inactivated, both consisting of antigens and excipients, that includes the adjuvants. These components may cause local or systemic undesirable adverse reactions, which vary from mild to severe according to vaccine components or the sensitivity of the animal or person. This literature review aims to show the vaccine mechanisms, how the immune system reacts, why adverse vaccine reactions occur and what are the main types of adverse reactions.

Trata-se de componentes celulares como os monócitos, fagócitos e as natural killers (NK); e também de fatores solúveis, que são o sistema complemento e algumas citocinas (Tizard, 2014)
Summary
O organismo lança mão de inúmeros mecanismos de defesa. O conjunto desses mecanismos é denominado sistema imune. Esse sistema é o que protege o organismo das invasões diárias e, portanto, torna-se essencial à manutenção da vida. São duas grandes frentes de defesa, sendo elas a (1) imunidade inata e a (2) imunidade adaptativa (Tizard, 2014)
