Abstract

This chapter analyzes the world photovoltaic market and industry from several key perspectives. World shipments of photovoltaic cells and modules reached 390.54 MWp in 2001, which was an increase of more than 34% over 2000. This chapter examines the world photovoltaic (PV) cell and module production by country, and by cell technology. Manufacturers' production by region/country, shipments, and production by cell technology, PV module production costs and material consumption, sliced single crystal and polycrystal silicon modules, and world PV market experience curve are analyzed. The chapter presents historical and current information on photovoltaic shipments and installations throughout the world. Principal market sectors and key applications are discussed. Worldwide communication/signal market, World PV diesel hybrid/replacement market, grid-connected systems, US on-grid distributed sector, the Japanese PV market, and the German PV market are analyzed. The chapter discusses PV equipment market by listing the principal companies involved. PV systems costs are analyzed for three typical types of applications—remote PV power systems, grid-connected small systems, and large central power systems.
