Abstract
One of the arguments of this chapter is that the Crimean War played an important part in Ottoman modernization. The chapter attempts to assess the social and political impact of the war on Ottoman state and society. The first practical impact of the war was an increase in the number of visitors to Istanbul and in the contacts between Europeans and Ottomans at all levels. Recruitment of non-Muslims into the army continued to be a serious problem long after the Crimean War. There were very practical considerations working against any movement towards a mixed Ottoman army. Slavery was an issue of controversy between the Ottomans and the European states and even Russia during the Crimean War. By the time of the Crimean War, slavery and the slave trade were already illegal in Europe.Keywords: Crimean War; Europe; Ottoman modernization; political impact; slavery; social impact
