Abstract
Police science (Policeywissenschaft) developed during eighteenth century into an independent academic discipline in Germany. Police science was the scientific doctrine of internal politics of older German territorial states. The emergence of police science was linked to German state formation on territorial level in post-Westphalian era. In contrast to Germany, in France literature concerning police remained more practical in nature. Eighteenth-century French writers contented themselves mainly with pondering adequate means to achieve bonne police and describing relevant statutes without too much theoretical ambition. In France literature on police embodied more traits of 'police law' rather than 'police science'. This was a result of fact that centralized state and its advanced administrative apparatus were built much earlier in French realm than in German states. Keywords: France; Germany; police science
