Abstract

X-ray excited (XL) and thermally stimulated luminescence (TSL) results of pure and europium doped LiBaF 3 have been reported. XL spectra of LiBaF 3 has shown emission peaks around 235 and 295nm. Incorporation of europium in LiBaF 3 decreased 295nm emission and showed its characteristic emission lines at 361 and 415nm. The 295nm emission has been attributed to the electron hole recombination at the V k-center being formed due to fluorine ions. Energy transfer from the 295nm emission band to the europium center is believed to be responsible for lowering the 295nm band in the presence of europium in LiBaF 3. The TSL glow curve pattern of LiBaF 3 showed two prominent glow peaks and a shoulder at 390, 450 and 505K, while europium in LiBaF 3 caused an additional glow peak at 420K besides an increase in the total output of TSL intensity. The glow peaks at 400, 450 and 505K have been attributed to hole trapping centers i.e. , F 0 and F(F̄) centers respectively.
