Abstract

The University of Western Australia is host to a new set of facilities for modelling fluidstructure- seabed interaction, based around our innovative O-tube technology. Our large and small O-tube flumes allow seabed flows to be simulated at a range of scales, including full scale modelling of small pipelines. Interactions with mobile sediments and infrastructure can be monitored. This paper describes the O-tube facilities and discusses scaling considerations when modelling coupled geotechnical, sediment transport and fluid mechanics phenomena. Example results are shown to illustrate the range of problems that can be tackled, and to demonstrate some particular insights provided by this new research facility.
