Abstract

In order to study the significance of the proposed galactose-pentose pathway for galactose metabolism in Ophiostoma multiannulatum (Lindberg 1970 b) we prepared a strain which had both this and the Leloir pathway functioning. UV was used for induction of mutations in the genes controlling enzymes of the Leloir pathway. Two mutants with enzymatic blocks in the Leloir pathway were isolated. The mutants were phenotypically characterized and it was concluded that the galactose-pentose pathway is only of minor importance in Ophiostoma as compared to the Leloir pathway.
