Abstract

UV curing of acryloyl functional polymers is well known and applied in paper and furniture coating industry. Application is normally done on flat substrates in a continuous process. The reason is obvious: only direct UV radiated paint is crosslinked. Needed UV intensity and doses depends on the distance between UV source and paint film and the amount of oxygen on the surface of the uncured film. These obstacles prevented R&D in the paint industry to think about UV paints for automotive OEM as well as refinish. Recent progress in raw material development and UV equipment lowered the hurdle for this application. Besides other challenges like drying of non-plane surfaces and comparable long distances between the surface of the car and the UV lamp this presentation deals especially with the correlation between film properties and influence of the concentration of oxygen in the air between UV source and paint film.
