Abstract

Background Studies have shown that scapular stabilization exercises produce positive outcomes in patients with lateral epicondylalgia. To date, no studies have investigated this treatment method in patients with medial epicondylalgia. This case report describes the utilization of a scapular stabilization program to treat a patient with medial epicondylalgia. Case Presentation A 52-year-old patient presented to physical therapy with medial elbow pain and was treated with an 8-week scapular stabilization program. Shortened form of the Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand Questionnaire (QuickDASH) score, pain, and muscle strength of the elbow, wrist and forearm were measured at baseline, discharge, and 1-month follow-up. Outcome and Follow-Up Clinically meaningful improvements in pain, QuickDASH score, and wrist strength were observed at 1-month follow-up. The patient was able to return to all previous activities. Discussion Improvements in pain, wrist flexion strength, and activity tolerance were obtained in a patient with medial epicondylalgia treated with a scapular stabilization program.
