Abstract

The article presents data on the utilization of shelters and latrines by Lontra longicaudis on a 1.1 km long stretch of a coastal stream in the Lagoa Verde Environmental Protection Area, in the southern Coastal Plain of Rio Grande do Sul State. Two shelters and 23 latrines were found on the eastern bank, characterized by a continuous sandy riparian wood, while two latrines were localized on the western bank, with predominance of field areas. The shelters consisted of spaces between roots of arboreal individuals (Salix humoldtiana and Schinus terenbinthifolius). They had a main chamber (connected to the entrances) and sidelong chambers localized at an upper level on the ground. Two latrines were utilized only once, while two others were utilized all over the study period. The remaining latrines were utilized at least twice. Feces were found in all latrines, while anal secretion was found in 13 latrines (52% of total of latrines). Footprints were found in 15 latrines(60%), while other three (8%) showed signs of scratches. The major utilization of the bank characterized by continuous riparian cover by L. longicaudis underscores the importance of the preservation of these forest formations for the conservation of this species. Key words: sandy riparian wood, feces, anal secretion, footprints, conservation.
