Abstract

The operation of fast spectrum concepts like Gas cooled Fast Reactor (GFR) requires fuel with high enrichment of the fissile isotope 239Pu. In this work the utilization of Weapon Grade Plutonium (WGrPu) in GFR is investigated. For that, the transport code MCNPX is employed to design two models of the GFR2400 core one is heterogeneous and the other is homogeneous. The designed models are used to perform a neutronic analysis of the use of WGrPu as a fissile material instead of the reference Reactor Grade Plutonium (RGrPu) vector. The proposed WGrPu fuel has shown some improved neutronic and safety parameters compared to the reference RGrPu fuel.
