Abstract

This work focuses on using a new, inexpensive adsorbent, Amberlite XAD–4 resin impregnated with Cyanex 572 to extract and separate Zr(IV) from its parents Y(III) and Sr(II). The extraction performance was investigated using both batch and continuous flow techniques. The highest separation factor of Zr from Y and Sr was obtained at 0.05 mol L−1 HCl. Zr(IV), Y(III), and Sr(II) were found to have maximal monolayer capacities of 29.1, 9.3, and 6.1 mg g−1, respectively. Chromatography was utilized to effectively separate the relevant metals from their mixed solution in a single step, yielding high recovery values of approximately 99.0%.
