Abstract

AbstractSand casting process is used to cast metallic components from ancient age. Silica sand is the basic raw material of sand mould casting. India is the second-largest casting producer in the world. Due to globalization, consumption of silica sand and the cost of silica sand increase. Therefore, foundry industries require low cost and easily available material for sand mould casting. In the present investigation, local riverbed sand used as an alternative material for sand mould casting process. The mould properties like shear strength and compactibility were evaluated at different moisture and bentonite content. The result revealed that as the concentration of moisture and bentonite percentage increases, the shear strength of river sand mould increases. The results revealed that the shear strength of sand mould consists of local riverbed sand which has 0.41 kg/cm2, and the amount of moisture and bentonite used was 5% and 14%, respectively and the coal dust was 5%. However, the compactibility of the new mould increases with increase in moisture content and has reverse trend with increase in bentonite content. This analysis gives the hope for the use of local riverbed sand to be used in sand mould casting.KeywordsRiverbed mouldSand castingShear strengthCompactibility
