Abstract

Indoor tanning using ultraviolet (UV) radiation is a known carcinogen (El Ghissassi et al., 2009), associated with increased risks of melanoma (Colantonio et al., 2014), squamous cell carcinoma, and basal cell carcinoma (Wehner et al., 2012). However, there is little information on where or when indoor tanning is used. The majority of literature on indoor tanning use is survey-based and designed to measure population-level behavior changes (Rodriguez-Acevedo et al., 2019). Surveys are susceptible to recall bias and only allow sequential cross-sectional ‘snap shots,’ often with years in between surveys.
