Abstract

ObjectivesInformation and Communication Technology (ICT) have a crucial role in the dissemination and sharing of knowledge, both for professionals and students. The aim of this study was to evaluate the qualifications of professors and students of a dental school in specific areas of information and communication technologies. MethodsThe methodology consisted on a cross sectional observational study (stratified sampling), made with all students and clinical professors of the Integrated Master in Dental Medicine of the Portuguese Catholic University, who received a questionnaire to evaluate the use of information and communication technologies. ResultsThe results indicate competence «more than adequate» (CN=33.3) in the handling of ICT, with the majority of respondents (66%) claiming to have received «appropriate» training in ICT during their Graduation. Among other results, it was observed that concerning online medical information search, the majority (54.4%) of respondents said that they know how to use Medline®, but would like to learn more. ConclusionsThe sample and the educational center analyzed have suitable conditions for implementing ICT in Dental Education. Information and Communication Technologies are considered essential in the future of education and clinical practice in dentistry.
