Using clever experimental design and exploiting the high temporal resolution power of magnetoencephalography, Liu etal. show in humans how "offline" reactivation of brain patterns allows the abstraction of new knowledge from previous experience. The key mechanism may involve hippocampal sharp-wave ripples.
