Abstract

Behind‐the‐meter (BTM), commercial and industrial (C&I), and battery energy storage systems (BESS) are well‐positioned for significant growth over the next decade. While currently a nascent technology, a strong mix of federal and state incentives coupled with state and federal electrification goals will drive market expansion significantly through 2030. Awareness and willingness to install BTM BESS at commercial and industrial companies across the United States is growing and several providers are offering a suite of storage systems and battery optimizing software to customers in anticipation of the next wave of the clean energy transition. A recent survey conducted by West Monroe of the key buyers of energy solutions at 70 US‐based companies across a variety of industries indicated that 84 percent of companies are aware of battery energy storage systems and 82 percent of those aware are indicating they are likely to implement a solution in the next five years.
