Abstract

This video will review the benefits of performing uterine artery ligation at its origin routinely, and then review the easily reproducible technique in multiple examples. In our practice, uterine artery ligation at its origin is performed routinely as the first step of a hysterectomy. In doing so, we have noted several benefits, such as significantly decreased blood loss, decreased overall operative time, improved ureteral and vascular visualization, therefore decreasing risk of potential injuries. In addition, routinely performing retroperitoneal dissection allows for increased confidence when applying this step during challenging cases. This is a video demonstration of uterine ligation at the origin in one simple and one complex hysterectomy. In conclusion, uterine artery ligation, when used routinely, is an easy technique that can reliably be applied to challenging hysterectomies.
