Abstract

The Soviet Union is today [late 1990, early 1991] in a state of disintegration. Various nationalities are struggling to free themselves from the yoke of Russian rule and to take their fate into their own hands. The Baltic states, the Ukraine, Moldavia and others are good examples. Yet the Muslim republics in Central Asia pose a much greater threat to the Soviet regime than the other nationalities. The wave of Islamic fundamentalism which has swept the Middle East has not been ignored by the Muslims of Asia. This minority may in the future present a challenge to Soviet hegemony.
