Abstract

PurposeShow our experience of postoperative endophthalmitis in cataract surgery with the use of broad-spectrum antibiotics in the irrigating solution. MethodsPatients having phacoemulsification cataract surgery between January 2008 and December 2013. Patients were classified into 2 groups: Group 1 (340 eyes) without prophylaxis antibiotic. Group 2 (268 eyes), received prophylactic antibiotics in irrigating solution with vancomycin (200μg/ml) or imipenem/cilastatin (200μg/ml). ResultsDuring the inclusion period, 608 eyes underwent cataract surgery. The incidence of endophthalmitis was 3 cases (0.88%) of 340 eyes without prophylaxis antibiotic and none in 268 eyes with prophylaxis; the difference was statistically significant (P=.061). ConclusionsThe prophylaxis antibiotic in the irrigation solution during phacoemulsification showed relation between the use of antibiotics and not present postoperative endophthalmitis.
