Abstract

We report our 2-year experience using buffered aqueous zinc formalin (ZF) as the routine fixative in the histology laboratory. This fixative replaced neutral buffered formalin in our automated tissue processor after some modifications. No added steps were necessary in handling or disposal. We compared the results of routine and special stains (including immunostains) using ZF and neutral buffered formalin, and found that ZF improved morphologic detail. All special stains yielded good results, and immunostainingfor certain lymphoid markers was enhanced in particular. We suggest consideration of the use ofZF as a routine fixative in the general histology laboratory
