Abstract

The possibility is studied of applying the Co3+/Co2+ oxidant mediator system for electrooxidation of nitrotoluenes on a platinum electrode in aqueous HNO3 solutions to obtain derivatives of nitrobenzoic acids. The obtained data allow stating that the oxidation potential of this system is sufficiently high to provide efficient oxidation of such the hardly oxidized or difficultly oxidizable organic compounds as polynitrotoluenes (2,4-dinitroand 2,4,6-trinitrotoluenes) to the corresponding polynitrobenzoic acids. It is shown that the target acids in the case of electrooxidation of mononitrotoluenes (p-nitroand o-nitrotoluenes) form complexes with the trivalent cobalt cation. The potential of the oxidation system decreases due to complexation, which is reflected on the oxidation reaction regioselectivity and depth.
